In this blog post, we are going to debunk some learning myths and talk about the process of learning a language. We will do so by highlighting some common misconceptions and guiding you in a way that can help, rather than overwhelming you. We will mostly focus on Serbian, however, this applies to every language.
Learning Serbian With AI
AI is not something we can ignore anymore. If you want to know our opinion about using AI for learning, yes, use it, but controlled and with scepticism. You can’t completely rely on AI tools or chatbots because they make mistakes. Often.
Ideally, you would double-check with your tutor or teacher. The best scenario is having your teacher or tutor guide you through the process of learning with AI.
Flashcards are NOT For Everyone
We want you to know that just because flashcards work a lot of the time for different people and types of learners, know that you don’t have to be one of them! It’s okay if it doesn’t click with you or help you in the process. There are other ways to learn: quizzes, imagery, hands-on, project-based learning, music, embodied cognition…
Immersive Learning is NOT For Beginners
You probably heard this a lot: just listen to music or watch movies in Serbian, you will learn so fast!!! However, we have to burst your pink bubble – this works only if you are not a beginner, but rather an intermediate learner. Listening to the language can familiarize you with the way it sounds, but it won’t magically unravel its meaning. Only when you master the basics of communication and comprehension can you go for immersive learning.
Shadowing is NOT That Effective
Shadowing technique is something we’ve been hearing about a lot lately. It consists of you listening to some audio content, pausing, and repeating. Similarly to immersive learning, this is pointless if you are a beginner, and becomes even less effective if you are an advanced learner. It’s created for that space in between, and you can practice it for a few months (if that), and move on to another method.
What is a cool alternative, is learning a chorus from a song you really love. Then, you can think about moving up, or choosing a different approach.
