Why is Coffee for Serbian People More Than Just a Beverage

Coffee is ingrained in the Serbian culture. We drink it on any and every occasion – whether it’s a casual get-together with friends, or a corporate meeting, cups of steaming coffee are a must.

Serbian People and Coffee - Where Did It All Start?

It all started during the Ottoman Empire’s rule over the territory that is now Serbia. Turkish people had a tradition of drinking a lot of coffee throughout the day, and passed on that custom to the subordinate culture, in this case, the Serbian culture. Depending on the part of the world you live in, this coffee is referred to as Turkish, Bosnian, or, simply, domaća kafa (homemade coffee).

It’s made from ground coffee beans. The process of making it is as follows: you put water in the coffee pot and heat it on the stove until it boils. You remove the pot, put ground coffee beans, and gently mix until it completely dissolved. Then, you put it back on the stove until it comes to a boil again. You keep it there for a few moments, until the coffee reaches the top of the pot, and remove it once more. You pour the coffee into little cups and serve it with a tray of sugar cubes.
