3 Things to Do to Improve Your Serbian in 2026 (From a Language Learner)

2026 is slowly approaching, and we are neck deep into planning our vision boards, organizing our planners, getting our bullet journals in order, in hopes of getting the most out of the following travel around the Sun. If you want to work on your Serbian language skills in the next year, this blog post is for you.

3 Steps to Take to Improve Your Serbian

Although it might sound silly, it isn’t – learning a language and improving it can fit into a few simple steps. The simpler and more mundane, the better. You will want your steps to be done daily, and incorporate them into your life regardless of its stage: studying, working, corporate baddie, retired, housewife, stay-at-home-dad, etc.

Believe it or not, if you plan your study time, accept that awkward moments are a part of the process and learning to continue speaking the language regardless is everything you need on your road to success. Lastly, you will want to move on from memorizing and start creating. Let’s break it down:

1. Plan your study time

Planning the time when you’ll be studying and making it last a certain amount of time is key. Take snippets of 15-30 minutes out of your day each day and focus on one aspect of Serbian you’d like. Whether that is a short but effective grammar drill (irregular verbs, cases declination…), a reading sprint with marking new words, or vocabulary repetition with flashcards – make sure you do it as planned.

This little daily effort stacks over time, and you will notice significant improvement by the end of the first month of doing this. Planning effectively and including the language into your daily life is doing half the heavy lifting on the road to Serbian fluency.

2. Embrace the awkward and learn to keep speaking Serbian

Learning a new language is awkward. Speaking is the way to express yourself, and when you are just learning how to speak and you are old enough to understand and feel shy or awkward, it can be painful. First, it’s important to find a comfortable and pleasant environment for learning – a good tutor, a nice group for lessons, a well-respected school…

Once you have that under wraps, it will be much easier to embrace those uncomfortable growing pains and just learn to keep speaking, despite being limited in vocabulary. Ignore the stutters, the feeling of your face getting redder by the second, the people looking at you while you struggle to express yourself… That’s a part of the process, and it is not supposed to be easy, but challenging, and even more rewarding in the end.

3. Move from memorizing to creating in Serbian

The last step, and the most important one we’d wanted to emphasize, is creating. What do we mean by that? To put it simply, you’d need to not only memorize and repeat the words or constructions learned, but also create your own sentences, expand your vocabulary and think of new ways to express yourself.

A good example of this is keeping a diary in the language you are learning, in this case, Serbian. It will drive you to explore new expressions, words, synonyms, and sentence structures. It will make you fail miserably but also prevent your brain from going into automatic mode and becoming less engaging with the language.

Key Takeaways

Three steps to take to improve in Serbian are:

  • To plan your study time and do it daily.
  • Accept the awkwardness and speak anyway.
  • Explore new vocabulary, expressions, and structures by yourself.
